Miss Nicole Hopkins | Teacher
This will be my third year choreographing for DSI and my first time within the regular schedule! I have been fortunate to explore many styles of movement throughout my dance journey. As a young student I experienced Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Lyrical, Hip Hop and chose to focus on my ballet training upon acceptance to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School.
Due to an injury I left the school knowing that I would have to find a new path within dance. This lead me to Contemporary / Improvisation and I immediately connected to the fusion of technical elements, diversity of execution and endless possibilities that could be created. I was fortunate to develop further interest at Joffrey Ballet School’s Contemporary Intensive in New York and as a student in Modus Operandi in Vancouver.
In order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the body I became a certified yoga teacher with The Yoga Alliance (200HR) and completed a degree in Kinesiology (minor in dance) at the University of Calgary. At the university I was introduced to W&M Physical Theatre and toured Poland and Germany with WM2 as a dancer in “The Mist”. Combining technical ballet knowledge and an understanding of body mechanics I developed an in house ballet syllabus for a Calgary studio. The syllabus goal was to teach correct and safe placement, progressive vocabulary and maximize to the student’s performance quality.
My first priority as a teacher is to support the student by providing a healthy environment where they are able to explore their own movement and develop their own unique potential as artists. Currently I am expanding my knowledge within yoga as I purse my 500HR Yoga Alliance Certification. I am very excited to be a part of the DSI team and look forward to an inspiring year!
